Brand new ISO Health & Safety standard’s development clears final hurdle

The brand new health & safety standard – ISO 45001 – has cleared the final hurdle in its development and will be published on 12 March 2018.

The last stage in the development of ISO 45001, ‘Occupational health and safety management systems’ was the ballot of ISO national members bodies. The 93% approval vote demonstrates the rigorous, expert processes that have gone into the standard’s development.

IIOC have been involved in the development of the standard right from the outset as one of the liaison members of the ISO Committee, with representatives from IIOC members.

Further details on ISO 45001 can be found here on the ISO website, with more in-depth information of the Committee’s site.

IIOC members will be offering certification to the new standard and this will be robustly back-up by three other key documents, which IIOC has also been instrumental in helping develop:

  • ISO/IEC 17021-10, ‘Conformity assessment – Requirements for bodies providing audit and certification of management systems – Part 10: Competence requirements for auditing and certification of occupational health and safety management systems’ will be used by IIOC members to ensure their auditors are at the correct level of competence to carry out the audits. This standard is then in turn used by accreditation bodies who check the certification bodies to ensure these levels are being adhered to.

Additionally, the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) have produced two key documents to support accredited certification to ISO 45001:

With the 2015 revision of the quality standard ISO 9001 and the environmental management system standard ISO 14001, the new health & safety safety ISO 45001 provides businesses and other organisations with three powerful tools for improvement.
